One thing that can’t be denied is that Remus really doesn’t hang around when it comes to designing and developing new exhausts, and the German firm has already produced a stunning performance system for the Mk7 Golf GTI Clubsport, itself only a few months old. The new system promises both performance and exhaust note benefits for those lucky enough to own an example of the Clubsport, one of the finest ever hot hatches and a certified Nurburgring master.
Those customers seeking to turn their GTI into a race car-scaring monster are well served by Remus, with the Clubsport system opening with a RACING downpipe with sports cat. Make no mistake, this is a brutal option but one well suited to the fitment at hand, and also one which must be fitted in conjunction with the Remus front silencer. The exhaust then progresses to a resonated stainless steel cat-back centre section, plus a connection tube which enables the mounting of either the L/R sports exhaust or the non-resonated L/R RACING axle back system.
The Remus Clubsport range effectively leaves customers with a choice; they can either plump for the Wolf Inside rear silencer (plus further single tail pipe options), or the Wolf Inside RACING rear silencer, again with a choice single tail pipe options. It goes without saying that the latter will be a far louder and more uncompromising system, though Remus actually allow would be customers to go one stage further with the Wolf Inside cat-back system with unresonated front section and a twin tail pipe arrangement. Not only is this a brutal and uncompromising option, it comes fitted with a pair of integrated electronic valves, actuators and a remote control module, which collectively allow the valve to be operated in 4 different positions.
Capping off a decidedly complex exhaust package (which rather reflects the specialised nature of the Clubsport itself), buyers can pick from a wide array of tail pipes. The Wolf Inside and Wolf Inside RACING lineup extends to a choice of 5 distinct options. The first trio are of a twin, angled 102mm design, with buyers able to select from either a straight cut/chromed, rolled edge/chromed or one with Titanium internals. The final two options from the Remus Street Race sub-range and are therefore ever so slightly smaller at 98mm across, with customers able to opt for either a regular chromed variant or one finished in black chrome, both with carbon fibre inserts.
Those buyers set on the Wolf Inside cat-back system with unresonated front section can pick from a choice of quad tail pipe designs, all 84mm in diameter; angled with a rolled edge and a chrome finish, straight cut with a carbon insert, angled with a carbon ring, straight cut with Black Chrome and a carbon insert, or one with a straight cut and Titanium internals.
Finally, Golf owners can also opt for a choice of rear diffusers, both of which have been specially developed to complement both the Clubsport and the Remus exhausts. Both carbon look and satin black diffusers can be specified, and either one must be fitted if the buyer opts for the Wolf Inside cat-back system with unresonated front section and quad pipes.
As is the case with all Remus systems, the quality of the workmanship involved is second to none, well above that of offerings from other manufactures and even rivaling OEM levels of fit and finish. Extensive testing of the system on the firm’s own development car has revealed a noticeable increase in performance across the rev range, with peak power increases of 9bhp on offer, plus a jump in torque of 9.3nm, figures that make this already potent car all the mightier!
Further evidence of Remus’ committed to forward-thinking technology can be found in both the Remus Powerizer and Remus Responder. Both plug and play systems, the former has been developed to give up to 25% more power and 20% more torque at the press of a button, while also saving fuel. It does this by toggling the engine management parameters in real time, optimising the nature of the map multiple times per second in order to ensure peak gas flow at any given time. Buyers can also opt for the Remus Responder, a system that improves throttle response by adjusting the accelerator pedal output signal, resulting in noticeably reduced response and reduced lag when when applied to cars with automatic transmissions.
There’s no denying that the Golf GTI Clubsport is a supremely capable car, quite possibly one of the best performance offerings that VW has ever produced, yet there’s always room for improvement. Fitting a Remus exhaust system is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ scenario; its systems are made to OEM standards, they have been designed to fit perfectly, come with a dizzying array of options and finishes, sound superb and have been proven to boost performance.
